Tire Shop 101: All About Your Tires

A lot of our customers just don't know what kind of tires to get. Honestly, shopping for tires can get confusing. Load rating, speed rating, aspects, and compounds. What does all that mean? We're going to take just a second to talk about tires so that you can pick the best tires for sale for your vehicle and needs. Let's start at the beginning:

  • Tire Sizes: The most prominent marking on the sidewall of your tire will be its size. It will look something like this: 245/75/R16. The first number (245) is the width of the tire in millimeters. The second number (the aspect ratio) is 75. The aspect ratio is a percentage of the tires' width in relation to sidewall height. In other words, the sidewall of this particular tire is 75% of 245mm. Lastly, the R16 indicates the tires' construction type (radial) and the size of the wheel it mounts to (in inches). So Radial-16". Jeep Wrangler owners will often get a second set of wheels and tires for off-roading that are about this size. 245's (as they're known by off-road enthusiasts) offer excellent protection and traction.

  • Tire Ratings: You've got load ratings, speed ratings, traction ratings, and temperature ratings. Have you ever seen that string of obscure numbers and letters on your sidewall? That's probably them. While it's beyond the scope of this page to list all the various rating symbols, here's the upper limit to all of them: a load rating of 120 allows for 3000lbs. A speed rating of Y** allows for speeds upwards of 180mph. An "AA" rating is the highest traction rating under slippery conditions, and an "A" rating is the highest rating for a tires' ability to withstand heat at speed. Lastly, a wear rating number will also be present. For instance, a rating of 100 means that tire will last twice as long as one with a rating of 50. Read more about our Jeep Wrangler towing capacity and see if you can't determine the best tires for that application!

  • And of course, there's even more info than that if you can believe it. The DOT logo flanks the tires' birthday stamp. You can see when a tire was made right down to the year, week, and day! Disreputable tire places would be happy to sell older tires and get them out the door, so make sure you know what you're looking at. While buying used tires can save you in the short term, you could be asking for it down the line. Bring a tire gauge. A dead tire is less than 3/32. A solid tire is somewhere around 6/32. A nearly new tire is better than 10/32. All of our used cars near Montgomery ride on tires that you can count on. So if you're looking for your next set of wheels, you can shop those with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of tires should I buy for my car?

Buying the right tires depends on your vehicle and driving habits. If you have a truck or SUV and you like to go off-roading, look into tires with deep treads that can handle tough terrain. If you'll mostly drive in the city, deep treads aren't a priority. You should also consider the size of your tire, and be aware of which tires come on the vehicle from the factory.

Does Bice Motors offer any discounts or promotions on tires?

Bice Motors does offer coupons and promotions that can help you save on your next tire purchase. Bring your vehicle to our tire shop in Alexander City, AL, to find tires for sale that meet your needs and coupons that can reduce the cost. Whether you need city-cruising tires or a set that can tackle an off-road adventure, our team can help. Schedule your visit today!

What are the signs that my tires need to be replaced?

The most common signs that your tires need to be replaced include your tire pressure monitoring indicator coming on, heavy vibrating during your drive, poor tread on your tire, and cracking on the tire wall. Bulging and the showing of interior metal parts also mean you need new tires as soon as possible. If you notice any of these signs, bring your vehicle to our tire shop for assistance.
